Columbus Police 9-1-1 Training Week

The Columbus Division of Police Communications Bureau will be holding another rendition of our 911 Personnel training week.  We are again opening the training up to outside agencies across the state for no cost. Below you will find information on each of the June 2018 classes and a link to RSVP.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

Monday, June 4th, 2018
700am – 300pm
Domestic Violence:
An 8-hour course taught by Senior Prosecutor Mike Wander.  Mr. Wander is a City of Columbus Prosecutor with the Domestic Violence and Stalking Unit.  This course covers:

  • Domestic violence statutes
  • Protection orders
  • Stalking
  • Lethality assessment factors
  • Physiology behind domestic violence
  • Past domestic violence cases
  • Information needed from the caller during a 911 call that helps prosecutors
  • Other items related to domestic violence and how it applies to a Call Taker/Dispatcher

700am – 300pm
Crisis Intervention:
An 8-hour course taught jointly by Columbus Police CIT Officers, Columbus Police Dispatcher/Call Taker Instructors, ADAMH of Franklin County, and Netcare.  This course covers the following topics:

  • History of CIT
  • Types of mental illnesses Law Enforcement may encounter
  • Dealing with PTSD/Veteran callers
  • Calming Techniques
  • Traumatic events for Callers and Call Takers
  • Hearing voices exercise
  • General Mental Health Resources
  • Franklin County Mental Health Resources

Wednesday, June 6th, 2018
 700am – 300pm
Hostage Negotiation:
An 8-hour course taught by Columbus Police Officer Terrance S. Kelley.  Officer Kelley is a 15-year veteran of CPD and has been on our Hostage Negotiation Team since 2011.  Officer Kelley has been involved in at least 350 barricade situations to date and has 23 years of military experience.  This course covers:

  • The hostage negotiation process
  • Negotiation tactics and how they can help a Call Taker
  • Skills necessary to keep a person in crisis on the phone until a negotiator can arrive
  • SWAT & Hostage Negotiation operations (including operating with suburban departments)
  • Two case studies from recent barricade situations with actual audio of the negotiation

Human Trafficking
:
An 8-hour course taught by a Columbus Police Officer on the Human Trafficking Taskforce unit.  The sworn personnel course is being tailored to Dispatchers and Call Takers.  This course covers the following topics:

  • History of Human Trafficking in Central Ohio
  • Signs of Human Trafficking
  • Trauma the victims experience
  • Key words related to Human Trafficking on phone calls
  • Central Ohio Human Trafficking Taskforce follow up procedures

Hazmat/WMD
:
A 5-hour course taught by The Columbus Fire Department. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion from the Columbus Division of Fire Training Academy for attending this course.
